Essay Concerning Humane Understanding

Book cover
By: (1632-1704)

In Essay Concerning Humane Understanding, John Locke explores the nature of human knowledge and understanding. He argues that all knowledge comes from experience, either through sensory perception or reflection on our own thoughts.

Locke's work is both enlightening and provocative, challenging readers to rethink their assumptions about the origins of knowledge. He shows how our minds are like blank slates at birth, filled in over time by our interactions with the world around us.

One of the most important aspects of Locke's argument is his distinction between primary and secondary qualities. He asserts that primary qualities, such as shape and motion, exist in the external world and can be known with certainty. Secondary qualities, on the other hand, are subjective and depend on the observer's sensory perceptions.

Overall, Locke's Essay Concerning Humane Understanding is a thought-provoking and influential work that has shaped the way we think about knowledge and human understanding. It is a must-read for anyone interested in epistemology and philosophy.

Book Description:
John Locke's essays on human understanding answers the question “What gives rise to ideas in our minds?”. In the first book Locke refutes the notion of innate ideas and argues against a number of propositions that rationalists offer as universally accepted truth. In the second book Locke elaborates the role played by sensation, reflection, perception and retention in giving rise to simple ideas. Then he elaborates on how different modes, substances and relations of simple ideas (of the same kind) give rise to complex ideas v.g. space, time, infinity etc. Finally he discusses complex ideas of mixed modes which arise from a combination of simple ideas of different kinds v.g. identity and diversity, cause and effect, etc. Prooflistening for this project was done by bala and Rapunzelina
