Dando continuidade à obra de Martins Pena, consolidou a comédia de costumes brasileira, sendo no país o principal autor do teatro de revista, em sua primeira fase. Sua atividade jornalística foi intensa, devendo-se a ele a publicação de uma série de revistas, além da fundação de alguns jornais cariocas.
