Ce n'est point par fausse modestie, encore moins par pusillanimité de caractère, que je déclare aimer beaucoup les événements romanesques, l'imprévu, l'intrigue, l' action dans le roman. Pour le roman comme pour le théâtre, je voudrais que l'on trouvât le moyen d'allier le mouvement dramatique à l'analyse vraie des caractères et des sentiments humains. Sans vouloir faire ici la critique ni l'éloge de personne, je dis que ce problème n'est encore résolu d'une manière générale et absolue, ni pour le roman, ni pour le théâtre.
