El entendimiento humano por su fuerza natural alcanza las primeras verdades, y para asegurarse de las demas que dependen de ellas, hace combinaciones; con las quales quanto mas se arrima á las verdades primitivas, tanto mas se asegura de la certidumbre en lo que piensa. La combinacion mas universal de pensamientos es la que hace enlazando unos con otros, por la necesaria conexîon que entre sí tienen todas las verdades. Entre los enlaces y conexîones de pensamientos el mas familiar y mas seguro es el que se executa por el raciocinio, que los Griegos llamaron Sylogismo ; pues de la junta de dos pensamientos en cierta manera dispuestos resulta un tercero distinto de ellos; con el qual el entendimiento se asegura, y se confirma en lo que quiere saber. Esto con un poco de meditacion conocerá qualquiera que su propio entendimiento lo hace naturalmente , aun en las cosas que son del trato civil, y por eso á esta fuerza de la mente humana la llaman conatural .
