Johann Wolfgang Goethe, später in den Adelstand erhoben, war zu Frankfurt am Main den 28. August 1749 geboren. Sein Großvater, Friedrich Georg , war Gastgeber zum Weidenhof. Eine glänzendere Stellung behauptete sein Großvater mütterlicher Seite Johann Wolfgang Textor als Kaiserlicher Schultheiß. Er war ein ernster, in sich gekehrter, ziemlich wortkarger Mann, dabei sehr gewissenhaft und pünktlich in der Erfüllung seiner Berufsgeschäfte. In seinem ruhigen, leidenschaftslosen Charakter zeigte sich kaum eine Spur von Heftigkeit. Sehr behaglich fühlte er sich in seiner einförmigen Lebensweise, die ihn früh Morgens auf's Rathhaus, hierauf an seinen Mittagstisch und von diesem zu einem Schläfchen in seinen alterthümlichen Sessel führte. An seine Wohnung in der Friedberger Straße stieß ein theils mit Weinstöcken, theils mit Küchengewächsen und Blumen bepflanzter Garten, der in Mußestunden sein Lieblingsaufenthalt war...
