Beyond Lies the Wub & The Skull

Book cover
By: (1928-1982)

"Beyond Lies the Wub & The Skull" is a fascinating collection of two short stories by Philip K. Dick. The first story, "Beyond Lies the Wub," follows a crew of astronauts who discover a strange and mysterious creature on an alien planet. As they interact with the creature, they begin to question their assumptions about intelligence and humanity. The story is thought-provoking and raises interesting philosophical questions about the nature of consciousness.

The second story, "The Skull," is a dark and twisted tale about a man who becomes obsessed with a skull that appears to be haunted. As he delves deeper into the mystery of the skull, he is forced to confront his own inner demons and fears. The story is intense and gripping, with a chilling atmosphere that lingers long after the final page.

Both stories showcase Dick's knack for blending science fiction with deeper existential themes. His writing is sharp and precise, drawing the reader into strange and unsettling worlds. Fans of speculative fiction will appreciate the thought-provoking concepts and eerie atmosphere of "Beyond Lies the Wub & The Skull."

Book Description:
Two stories in the inimitable Philip Dick style. What is a Wub? A 400 pound slovenly, fat, ungainly, drooling animal that looks like a cross between a walrus and an enormous hog? Well, yes that is pretty much what he looks like and for 50 cents, a good bargain no matter how he tastes. The hungry spaceship crew expect to find out. Of course the Wub may not entirely agree but it doesn't have much to say about it. The second story, The Skull, is a skilful mesh of time travel, unscrupulous governments, prisoners, and religion. With an assassin thrown in for good measure. Enjoy!

I turned this into a readers theater years ago. My students loved it. I introduced it as, "today, we are going to read about a telepathic space pig."
