Kun Venäjä ja Ruotsi suuren pohjoismaiden sodan jälkeen sovittelivat rauhaa, vaati ensinmainittu itselleen osan Suomea Kymijoesta pohjoiseen päin Lappeenrantaa myöten, niin että osa Saimaata olisi joutunut Venäjälle. Myöhemmin vedettiin raja kuitenkin Vehkalahden kirkon itäitse peninkulman matka pitkin rannikkoa Vilajokeen, josta se kolme peninkulmaa Viipurista kääntyi luoteeseen ja pohjoiseen Kirvun ja Kaukolan pitäjiin. Tätä valtiorajaa varten oli Vilajoesta hakattu metsän läpi leveä katu, lähtökohta merkittynä kivipyykillä, jonka keskustaan oli pystytetty puinen paalu. Puoli peninkulmaa siitä itäänpäin sijaitsi Vilajoen kylä samannimisen virran rannalla. Sinne oli rakennettu uusia mökkejä venäläiselle rajavartiastolle, ja niiden yli kohosi ruununmakasiineja, joiden tavaroita tänne sijoitetut vartioitsivat. Enemmistö kylän varsinaista väestöä oli kuitenkin suomalaisia, ja aluksi he kauhulla; näkivät kylässään noita entisiä vihollisia.
