Op mijn handgeklap verscheen een in het wit gekleede Indiër, wiens donker hoofd met den intelligenten, zwaarmoedigen blik door een grooten tulband gedekt werd, en reikte mij met een deemoedigen groet den verkwikkenden dronk ijslimonade. Daarna goot hij mij in een groote badkuip stroomen water over het lijf en diende handig en zonder geruisch het rijke engelsche ontbijt, dat intusschen door een ander was klaargezet. Uit een onrustigen slaap werd ik warm en vol muggenbeten wakker. Natuurlijk was de bruine lummel, die buiten vóór mijn slaapkamer gehurkt zat, weer eens een keertje ingeslapen.
