Under the Chilian Flag A Tale of War between Chili and Peru by Harry Collingwood is a historical adventure novel that transports readers back to the 19th century and immerses them in a captivating tale of war, bravery, and unexpected alliances.
The story revolves around the conflict between two South American nations, Chile and Peru. The author, Harry Collingwood, expertly weaves together a narrative that combines historical accuracy with thrilling fictional elements. Through his vivid descriptions, readers are transported to the heart of the battlefields, where they witness the bravery and determination of the characters.
One of the novel's greatest strengths lies in the well-developed characters. Collingwood introduces us to a diverse cast, each with their own motivations, strengths, and flaws. From the fearless protagonist, Captain Ralph, to the cunning antagonist, Colonel Montezuma, every character adds depth and complexity to the story.
The pacing of the novel is excellently maintained, ensuring a constant sense of excitement and anticipation. The author skillfully balances the intense battle sequences with moments of introspection and personal growth for the characters. This creates a well-rounded narrative that keeps readers engaged from the first page to the last.
Moreover, Collingwood's attention to historical detail is remarkable. The author seamlessly blends real-life events with his fictional plot, capturing the political climate and military strategies of the time. This not only adds credibility to the story but also educates readers about the historical context in which the events unfold.
The writing style is gripping and immersive, painting vivid scenes in the reader's mind. Collingwood's descriptive prose breathes life into the settings, from the arid deserts to the bustling cities, making readers feel they are right alongside the characters.
Despite its strengths, the novel does have a few minor drawbacks. The pacing occasionally slows down during certain exposition-heavy passages, which may require readers' patience. Additionally, some characters lack a fully fleshed-out backstory, leaving readers wanting to know more about their histories and motivations.
However, these minor critiques do not detract from the overall enjoyment and impact of the story. Under the Chilian Flag stands as a compelling historical adventure novel that effectively combines history, action, and relatable characters. Harry Collingwood showcases his talent for storytelling, taking readers on a thrilling journey through a turbulent time in South American history. Fans of historical fiction, particularly those interested in military conflicts, will find this book a worthwhile and engaging read. By Harry Collingwood There was a state of war between Chili and Peru in the 1870s. It was all to do with a desert area that lay between Chili, Peru and Bolivia. At first this desert was not particularly claimed by any of these countries, but when it was discovered that it held rich reserves of nitrates, the three of them fell out. Two young Englishmen, with sea going experience, were aboard a British vessel trading in nitrates and other ores. The captain was a very disagreeable character, and they determined to leave him, and sign up with the Chilian authorities for employment in the Chilian Navy, which was short of officers. They were taken on, and the rest of the book details some of the adventures they had, and the trials and tribulations they endured. This is a very exciting and enjoyable book. There are a few Spanish words, and of course the ships have Spanish names, but you soon get used to that. I fully recommend it, especially if you can make it into an audiobook. NH.
