The Otterbein Hymnal For Use in Public and Social Worship   By: (1854-1942)

Book cover

The Otterbein Hymnal For Use in Public and Social Worship by Edmund S. (Edmund Simon) Lorenz is a comprehensive compilation of hymns designed to enrich the worship experience for individuals and communities alike. Lorenz's passion for sacred music resonates throughout the book, as he carefully curates a selection of hymns that capture the essence of religious devotion.

One of the most commendable aspects of this hymnal is its inclusivity, as it includes hymns from various denominations and traditions. This allows readers from different backgrounds to find solace and inspiration within its pages. The hymns range from the traditional and well-known to lesser-known gems, ensuring a diverse and spiritually fulfilling experience for the readers.

Lorenz's expertise as a composer and hymnologist shines through in the meticulous organization of the hymnal. The hymns are thoughtfully arranged according to themes, making it easy for readers to find relevant songs for specific occasions. Additionally, each hymn is accompanied by relevant scriptural references, enhancing the devotional aspect of worship.

The inclusion of carefully selected sheet music and lyrics further enhances the usability of the hymnal. Whether used by choirs, congregations, or individuals, the clear and well-structured format ensures a seamless experience. The sheet music is presented with clarity, making it accessible for both experienced musicians and those with limited musical training.

Moreover, the introduction to each hymn is a welcome addition as it provides insightful background information. This not only deepens the readers' understanding of the hymns but also reinforces the spiritual connection fostered during worship.

However, it is worth noting that for those seeking a hymnal with more contemporary or modern compositions, The Otterbein Hymnal may seem slightly outdated. While this may limit its appeal to younger audiences, its timeless qualities and rich historical value make it an indispensable resource for those seeking a traditional worship experience.

Overall, The Otterbein Hymnal For Use in Public and Social Worship is an exceptional compilation that caters to the needs of diverse worshiping communities. Lorenz's expertise as a hymnologist is evident, and his curation of hymns ensures a spiritually enriching experience for readers. Whether used in communal worship or as a personal devotional tool, this hymnal is a valuable resource that preserves the essence of sacred music for generations to come.

Introduction

The General Conference of 1889 ordered the publication of a hymnal that should be fully adapted to the needs of our church. In compliance with these instructions, the publishing agent, Rev. W.J. Shuey, arranged for its issue. Rev. E.S. Lorenz, well and favorably known throughout the Church, was asked to edit it, and, with the assistance of a thoroughly competent committee, has accomplished his task. I have carefully examined it in every part, and cannot see where any improvement can be made. It is pre eminently a United Brethren Hymn Book, providing as it does for every phase of our characteristic church life. It combines the solidity and stateliness of the standard hymns of the ages, with the life and sprightliness of the modern gospel song... Continue reading book >>
