One Man's Initiation—1917   By: (1896-1970)

Book cover

John Dos Passos's One Man's Initiation—1917 is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged account of the author's experiences during World War I. Published in 1920, this memoir encompasses Dos Passos's journey from an eager American student who yearned for adventure to an introspective soldier who witnessed the horrors of war firsthand.

This book stood out to me because it offers a unique perspective on a war that has been extensively written about. Dos Passos's writing style is captivating and immersive, transporting the reader to the trenches alongside him. His vivid descriptions evoke a sense of unease and the sheer brutality of war, making it almost impossible not to empathize with his experiences.

One of the strengths of this memoir lies in Dos Passos's ability to convey the impact of war on the human psyche. From the initial excitement and idealism to the gradual disillusionment and loss of innocence, he masterfully captures the psychological toll that war exacts on individuals. The war scenes are vividly depicted, but the emotional turmoil Dos Passos experiences truly drives the narrative and gives the book its heart and soul.

Additionally, the author's introspective musings and philosophical reflections further elevate this memoir. Through his introspection, Dos Passos explores themes of identity, morality, and the futility of war. His candid examination of his own beliefs and the impact of war on his understanding of the world adds a depth and richness to the narrative that sets it apart from other war memoirs.

One Man's Initiation—1917 does have its drawbacks, however. At times, Dos Passos's prose can be dense and convoluted, making it a challenging read for those not familiar with his style. The narrative also occasionally meanders, deviating from the main storyline and delving into tangential subjects. Some readers may find this distracting or unnecessary.

Nevertheless, these minor flaws do not detract from the overall impact of the book. In fact, they may even contribute to the authenticity of Dos Passos's tale, as war itself is often chaotic and nonsensical. The emotional resonance of this memoir ensures that it remains relevant and poignant, even a century later.

In conclusion, One Man's Initiation—1917 is a powerful and deeply affecting memoir that offers a raw and personal perspective on the experience of war. Dos Passos's ability to convey the emotional and psychological impacts of conflict make it a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the human side of war. Despite its challenging prose, this book is an essential addition to any reader's library, as it serves as a stark reminder of the enduring impact of war on the lives of those who lived through it.

One Man's Initiation 1917

CHAPTER I

In the huge shed of the wharf, piled with crates and baggage, broken by gang planks leading up to ships on either side, a band plays a tinselly Hawaiian tune; people are dancing in and out among the piles of trunks and boxes. There is a scattering of khaki uniforms, and many young men stand in groups laughing and talking in voices pitched shrill with excitement. In the brown light of the wharf, full of rows of yellow crates and barrels and sacks, full of racket of cranes, among which winds in and out the trivial lilt of the Hawaiian tune, there is a flutter of gay dresses and coloured hats of women, and white handkerchiefs...
