A Joaquina do Espinhal tinha ido, no fim da tarde, lavar ao rio a roupa dos pequenos. Era no mez de dezembro. A agua corria por entre os choupos, fria e levemente encrespada pela brisa que soprava do norte. Joaquina do Espinhal, com as saias arregaçadas na cintura, as pernas mettidas na agua ate ao joelho, ensaboava a roupa e batia a com força sobre a pedra poida e lustrosa do lavadouro.

Da outra banda, pelo carreiro que havia á beira do rio, passou o filho do moleiro a tanger os machos. O rapaz ia tranzido de frio, com a golla da jaqueta apanhada para as orelhas, a assobiar alto. Assim que reconheceu a lavadeira, parou, fincou a mão ao tronco d'uma arvore, e, debruçando se sobre o rio, perguntou de lá:

Vocemecê não tem frio?

A Joaquina aprumou se e respondeu:

Ai! és tu, Jeronymo! Frio? Quem fala n'isso? Quando a gente tem filhos, não deita conta a nada. Onde ides?

Vou levar a fornada a casa do sr. doutor.

Pois vae com Deus, vae.
