Oli toinen helluntaipäivä vuonna 1854. Ukko Swart istui nojatuolissaan piippuaan polttaen päivällisen jälkeen, sulattaessaan niitä suloisia viskunasoosin möykkyjä, joita hänen eukkonsa oli laittanut hänelle.

Lempeä aurinko paistoi niin lämpimästi ikkunasta sisälle ja säteet ne leikkivät lattialla. Pienintäkään tuulenpuuskaa ei tuntunut ulkona, syvin hiljaisuus vallitsi sekä ulkona että huoneissa, ainoastaan kellon yksitoikkoinen tik tak kuului, ja ukko Swartin silmänkannet tulivat niin painaviksi. Tik tak! tik tak! Hän sulki silmänsä, nyökäytti päätänsä ja kello se vaan naksutti tik tak, tik tak!
