Alle Leute, die auf den kleinen Dampfern von oder nach der nahen Stadt hier vorbeikamen und an der Landungsbrücke unterhalb der Kapelle anlegten, wußten davon zu erzählen, wie behaglich und traulich geborgen Krogskog doch daläge. Die Berge am Horizont nahmen sich großartig aus; hier vorn aber waren sie niedriger. Zwischen zwei vorspringenden, bewaldeten, langgestreckten Hügelrücken lag der Hof. So dicht drängten sich die Häuser an die Anhöhe zur Rechten, daß es den Dampferpassagieren vorkam, als könne man vom Dach des Hauses auf den Hügel hinüberspringen; der Westwind fand hier keinen Einlaß; wie beim Versteckspiel konnte man zu ihm sagen: "Ein Haus weiter!" Die Küstenlinie des südlichen Norwegen ist häufig unterbrochen. Daran sind die Berge und die Flüsse schuld. Das Gebirge läuft in Hügel und Landzungen aus, denen oft Inseln vorgelagert sind; die Ströme haben Täler gegraben und münden in Buchten.

In solch einer Bucht, dem "Kroken", lag das Gehöft. Ursprünglich hieß der Hof Krokskog, woraus die dänischen Beamten in ihren Protokollen "Krogskov" machten; jetzt heißt er Krogskog.
