Als Strindberg 1887 das Manuskript dieses Romans dem stockholmer Verleger übersandte, strich dieser vor dem Druck nicht weniger als 22 Stellen, die ihm für schwedische Magen zu kräftig erschienen, trotzdem der Dichter gegen diese Vergewaltigung protestierte. Erst nach dem Tode Strindbergs sind diese 22 Stellen aus dem Nachlasse ans Licht gekommen, aber auch jetzt noch nicht dem Romane eingefügt worden. Diese deutsche Übersetzung ist also die erste vollständige Ausgabe des Werkes.
