Zwischen Podolin und Lomnitz, wo sich die Ebene aus einer flachen Mulde zu einem unscheinbaren Hügelchen erhebt, lag der Ansorge Hof. Das Wohngebäude lehnte mit der Rückseite gegen die wilden Hecken, die den weitläufigen parkartigen Garten begrenzten. Das Haus, mit den weißgekalkten Mauern tief in die Erde gebohrt, erschien durch eine zum Tor führende Steintreppe und durch die zopfigen Verzierungen um die Fenstervierecke als ein Mittelding zwischen Bauern und Herrenhaus. Das überhängende Ziegeldach leuchtete wie eine mächtige Kapuze brennend rot über die Landschaft. Vom Dorf war nur der Kirchturm zu sehen, denn unvermutet, durch eine Laune der Natur, erhebt sich bei Podolin ein schroffer Erdhügel, der den träg einherziehenden Fluß zwingt, ihm in weitem Knie auszuweichen.
