Η Γκράτσια Ντελέντα (Grazia Deledda) γεννήθηκε το 1871 στο Νούορο της Σαρδηνίας. Αν και καταγόταν από ευκατάστατη οικογένεια, οι σπουδές της υπήρξαν πολύ περιορισμένες και δεν ξεπέρασαν εκείνες της τέταρτης τάξης της στοιχειώδους εκπαίδευσης. Σε ένα περιβάλλον ασφυκτικό και εχθρικό για την ανάπτυξη της γυναικείας προσωπικότητας, όπως ήταν γενικά η ιταλική επαρχία και ειδικότερα η Σαρδηνία στα μέσα του 18ου αιώνα, μόνη διέξοδος για τις ανησυχίες και τα ενδιαφέροντα της νεαρής Ντελέντα ήταν η ανάγνωση λογοτεχνικών έργων.
